LTA Ratings

Apply for an LTA Rating

See the new Mini Tennis ratings Guide on the Oxfordshire LTA site [29 August 2008] (For players born 1999 or after)

To participate in a singles event of an LTA tournament, a player must have a valid LTA membership number on the first day of the tournament.

Each player is given a rating to ensure even competition. Note the difference between a RATING of your playing level and the LTA RANKING which orders players by results - for example, Andy Murray has a RATING of 1.1 and is RANKED at number one.

An LTA Player Rating is a way of measuring your tennis ability, so you can see how you are improving. It also means you can make sure you are entering the right standard of competitions. It’s a bit like a golf handicap. If you say what your rating is, other players will know what level you are irrespective of age.

An LTA Player Rating, in conjunction with an LTA membership number, is also your passport to play in the 2,000 or so competitions run and overseen by the LTA. You will need to apply for a rating in order to enter LTA tournaments.

Please ask Steve or Fiona if you have any questions or are unsure on how to proceed.

How to obtain an LTA Rating

Visit the LTA How to Start page to begin the process.

When you first apply, your LTA Player Rating is based on the information you supply in a simple questionnaire. After that, it will depend on your results from competitive matches against other rated players.

Whether you are a top performer or new to tennis, there is a rating category suitable for you. Ratings do not depend on age – so if you are a junior you could have a better rating than your parents.

There are 20 rating bands. A rating of 1.1 is the highest level and 10.2 is the lowest. Beginners will get a rating of 10.2.

How your rating is worked out

Your rating is assessed twice a year and your new rating will depend on your results in matches during the previous six months. (See dates below).

If you are consistently beating players who have the same rating as you or better, and not losing against too many players rated the same or lower, it is likely your rating will increase.

Please note that your rating is not guaranteed to change, even if you are performing well and registering wins. Adults with a high-standard rating, of 5.1 or better, can only have their rating decreased at the end of the summer. Junior players will never go down to a lower rating.
